The Ghana Police Service has foiled an alleged robbery attempt targeting three banks at Labone in Accra, arresting one suspect and killing two others in a shootout.
The incident occurred at about 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2026, after the Police received intelligence that a suspected robbery gang was preparing to attack the GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank branches in Labone.
A police response team was immediately deployed to the area, where suspected members of the gang were spotted in two vehicles parked near the banks.
According to the Police, one of the vehicles sped away after the suspects noticed the presence of law enforcement officers.
The Police pursued the vehicle and arrested one of its occupants, identified as Augustine Okechuku Maazi.
The other occupant reportedly escaped.
The occupants of the second vehicle also attempted to flee while firing shots at the Police.
Officers returned fire, resulting in the deaths of two of the suspects.
The Police subsequently recovered two vehicles believed to have been used by the suspected robbers—a Toyota Highlander with registration number GS-1434-18 and a Hyundai Tucson with registration number GS-7915-17.
Suspect Augustine Okechuku Maazi is currently in police custody and assisting with investigations, while the bodies of the two deceased suspects have been deposited at the morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
The Ghana Police Service commended the response team for successfully preventing the planned robbery and expressed appreciation to members of the public for providing credible information on suspected criminal activities.
The Service urged the public to continue supporting the Police with timely information to help prevent crime and protect lives and property.
