The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening logistics cooperation with Burkina Faso as the two countries explore ways to improve transit trade through Ghana’s ports.
The Director-General of GPHA, Major General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono, on Friday, July 7, 2026, received Burkina Faso’s State Minister for Warfare and Political Defence, Major General Célestin Simporé, during a visit aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation.
The engagement provided an opportunity for both sides to discuss practical measures to make Ghana’s ports more efficient, competitive and secure for transit trade, particularly in support of Burkina Faso’s growing ambitions in the regional logistics sector.
Major General Tanye-Kulono said GPHA fully supports Burkina Faso’s ambition of becoming a logistics and re-export hub for the Sahel.
He said the Authority is working to simplify port procedures and reduce the cost of doing business through Ghana’s ports to help Burkina Faso strengthen its position as a regional trade hub.
According to him, improving efficiency at Ghana’s ports will not only facilitate trade between the two countries but also contribute to broader economic integration within the region.
For his part, Major General Simporé commended Ghana for its continued support in facilitating trade for Burkina Faso despite prevailing security challenges in the region.
He described the relationship between Ghana and Burkina Faso as one founded on trust, mutual respect and a shared commitment to African solidarity.
Major General Simporé expressed confidence that deeper cooperation in logistics and transit trade would generate significant economic benefits for both countries.
The engagement underscores the strategic importance of Ghana’s ports to Burkina Faso and other landlocked countries in the Sahel, while highlighting the need for continued collaboration to improve trade efficiency, security and regional connectivity.
