Koforidua Technical University (KTU) has suspended all Students’Representative Council (SRC) activities indefinitely following the arrest of 10 individuals over the alleged production and sale of cannabis-infused drinks and ice cream during this year’s SRC Week celebrations.
The university announced the decision in a statement on Thursday, 6th August 2026 describing it as a precautionary measure while investigations continue. It also disclosed that a committee has been established to investigate the incident and recommend measures to prevent similar occurrences.
The arrests were carried out by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) on Saturday, August 1, during the university’s SRC Week celebrations. KTU clarified that the incident occurred during SRC Week and not Hall Week celebrations, contrary to some media reports.
According to the university, seven of the 10 people arrested are KTU students and remain in NACOC custody in Accra, where they are assisting with investigations.
Management said it visited the students after making inquiries to determine which security agency had conducted the operation.
“Meanwhile, as a precautionary measure, all SRC activities have been banned until further notice, and a committee has been constituted to investigate the matter thoroughly and provide recommendation(s) to prevent any future occurrences,” the statement said.
KTU noted that its student handbook classifies involvement in such conduct as misconduct but stressed that disciplinary action would be guided by the outcome of ongoing investigations.
The university also reminded the public that the affected students are entitled to the presumption of innocence under the 1992 Constitution.
“The affected students are presumed innocent until proven or pleaded guilty by a competent Court of Law,” management stated.
KTU said parents of the affected students have been informed, while urging other parents, students, staff and alumni to remain calm. It added that it is cooperating fully with NACOC and other relevant authorities and will announce any further action after investigations have been concluded.
