President John Dramani Mahama is set to embark on a four-day official visit to Jamaica from Sunday, August 2, to Wednesday, August 5, 2026, as part of efforts to deepen Ghana’s historical, diplomatic and economic ties with the Caribbean nation.

The visit, according to the Presidency, is aimed at revitalising Ghana-Jamaica relations, promoting stronger cooperation with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and advancing discussions on the global reparations agenda.

The trip comes shortly after Ghana extended support and relief assistance to Jamaica following a major natural disaster, with the visit expected to reaffirm Ghana’s solidarity with its Caribbean partners and highlight the enduring connection between Africa and the African Diaspora.

A major highlight of President Mahama’s visit will be his participation in a high-level Reparations Dialogue at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus, with Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor of UWI and Chairman of the CARICOM Reparations Commission.

The engagement will focus on the call for reparations for the transatlantic slave trade and its enduring impact, building on Ghana’s advocacy within the African Union and CARICOM’s ongoing efforts on the issue.

As part of activities to celebrate shared Pan-African heritage, President Mahama will lay a wreath at the shrine of Jamaica’s National Hero, The Right Honourable Marcus Mosiah Garvey, at the National Heroes Park.

He is also expected to visit Seville Heritage Park in St. Ann, where preserved Ghanaian Village Houses symbolise the ancestral links between Ghana and Jamaica.

The official itinerary includes high-level bilateral talks at the Office of the Prime Minister, where discussions will focus on trade, culture and South-South cooperation.

President Mahama will also address a joint sitting of the Jamaican Parliament at the George William Gordon House, where he is expected to outline his vision for a stronger Africa-Caribbean partnership.

Other engagements include a Trade and Investment Dialogue and a tour of the Kingston Freeport hosted by the Port Authority of Jamaica.

The President is also scheduled to pay a courtesy call on the Leader of the opposition, Mark Golding, MP, attend the “Mello-Go-Roun” cultural event at the National Arena as part of Jamaica’s 64th Independence Anniversary celebrations, and be hosted to a State dinner by Governor-General Sir Patrick Allen and Lady Allen at King’s House.

The Presidency said the visit will mark a new chapter in Ghana-Jamaica relations, strengthen Ghana’s role as a bridge between Africa and CARICOM, and advance cooperation in areas including economic development, cultural exchange and the pursuit of reparatory justice.
