Ghana’s long-awaited Volivo Bridge project has taken another step towards implementation following the opening of the bidding process, with the government targeting the commencement of construction by late this year or early 2027.
The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, announced the development on Thursday, November 5, describing the proposed structure as a major addition to the country’s engineering and infrastructure landscape.
According to the minister, efforts to develop the project date back to 2015–2016, with significant preparatory work undertaken over the years. He expressed confidence that the latest stage would bring the project closer to actual construction.
“This will be the most beautiful engineering bridge piece on the landscape of Ghana. This process started somewhere 2015-2016. A full bidding process was carried out. We are hoping that towards the end of the year, early part of next year, actual construction work should be ready,” he said.
Mr. Agbodza also acknowledged the time taken to reach the current stage, crediting cooperation with Japanese partners and consultants for helping to speed up the processes required to advance the project.
“We shouldn’t have been at this milestone yet, but working together with our Japanese counterparts and the consultants, we’ve been able to fast-track many of the processes leading to us having the opportunity to do the bid opening today,” he stated.
The opening of bids represents a key step towards the project’s implementation, with the next phase expected to bring greater clarity on the construction arrangements.
The government is hopeful that the necessary processes will be completed to allow physical construction to begin towards the end of 2026 or in the early part of 2027.
