The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially announced that it will hold its presidential primaries on Saturday, January 31, 2026, to select a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
The decision was taken during a crucial meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.
The announcement was made by NPP General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, who confirmed that the date does not require any amendment to the party’s constitution.
Addressing the media, he said, “The Committee also spoke about the time for our presidential primaries. And again, the Committee agrees that that decision does not warrant amendment of our Constitution. And the National Council today also made the decision that the date for our presidential primaries is set for January 31, 2026. That will be the date that we shall hold our presidential primaries.
The upcoming primaries are expected to be hotly contested, as key party figures prepare to vie for the opportunity to lead the NPP into the 2028 polls.
So far, several prominent party members have signaled interest in contesting, including:
- Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President and the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate
- Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central
- Dr. Bryan Acheampong, former Minister for Food and Agriculture
- Boakye Agyarko, founding member and former Energy Minister
Party officials have assured members and the public of a free, fair, and transparent electoral process, grounded in the NPP’s core democratic values.
Guidelines for nominations, timelines for campaign activities, and a code of conduct for aspirants are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
