New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Bryan Acheampong has dismissed the significance of a recent endorsement by 15 Members of Parliament (MPs) in the Eastern Region for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, saying the move will not derail his campaign.
The MPs, including Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh (Nsawam-Adoagyiri) and Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah (Ofoase-Ayirebi), publicly declared their support for Dr. Bawumia at a press conference last week.
The endorsement was presented as a show of unity behind the former Vice President’s bid, with the MPs pledging to deliver their constituencies in his favour.
But Mr. Acheampong, a former Minister for Food and Agriculture, downplayed their influence, insisting that the real power lies in the hands of the over 20,000 delegates across the region.
“In the Eastern Region, there are about 20,000 delegates who will vote. A few MPs standing together—15 in total—cannot change the outcome,” he argued.
He claimed that despite the public show of support, some of the MPs privately reached out to him afterwards. “After their press conference, some of them even called me to explain. I told them, ‘The youth of today, you like to play,’” he said.
Mr. Acheampong further noted that his grassroots structures remain firm, even in constituencies represented by MPs who endorsed Dr. Bawumia.
“I have already informed Dr. Bawumia that I am standing firm. Those 15 people who shifted camp—I have already secured their constituencies,” he added.
Positioning himself as a strong contender, Mr. Acheampong maintained that a handful of MPs cannot outweigh the backing of thousands of delegates, stressing that his campaign is firmly on course in the Eastern Region.
