Rehabilitation work has started on the 8.6-kilometre Pantang–Abokobi road, including the internal roads of Pantang Hospital, with contractors aiming for early completion despite ongoing traffic challenges.
The project includes upgrading some culverts from 600 millimetres to 900 millimetres and constructing new culverts in other sections.
Joseph Adams, Managing Director of Awerco Construction, said, “We are currently working on a major culvert which has deteriorated significantly. At the moment, we are diverting the road to allow traffic to move while we reconstruct the culvert.”

He added that ground stabilisation on the diverted section was expected to be completed by the end of the day to ensure safe passage for vehicles, particularly heavy trucks.
“The next phase will involve removing the existing culvert and replacing it with a larger one, as well as expanding it to improve water flow and durability,” Adams explained.
Adams noted that old asphalt would soon be scarified, followed by filling, compaction, and ongoing culvert works.

He stressed that, although the contract duration is 24 months, efforts are being made to complete the project ahead of schedule, with night work planned to ease traffic.
Madina MP Francis Xavier Sosu highlighted the road’s strategic importance, noting, “Along this stretch, we have the Pantang Hospital, the incoming headquarters of the Ghana Health Service, projects by the Mental Health Authority, and a growing residential population. This has made the road very strategic.”
Sosu revealed that President Mahama, through the Roads Minister, had cleared the project following concerns over the road’s condition.

He also appealed for a dual carriageway upgrade: “Although the current approval is for a single carriageway, I humbly request that the Roads Minister visits the site to consider upgrading it to a dual carriageway for the benefit of the people.”
The MP urged residents to cooperate with contractors, noting that temporary disruptions during construction would ultimately serve the community’s long-term interests.
