The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, appears before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) again today, May 27, as part of ongoing investigations into alleged illegal mining activities.
Chairman Wontumi reported to the CID Headquarters in Accra at midday on Monday, May 26, accompanied by a legal team led by former Attorney General Godfred Dame.
In a statement issued by the Ghana Police Service on Monday, the CID confirmed the purpose of the meeting, stating:
“Following an invitation by the Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the Ahanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi reported at the CID Headquarters today Monday 26th May 2025 at Mid-day to assist with investigation. He was accompanied by a team of Lawyers led by Former Attorney General Mr. Godfred Dame.”
The police indicated that Wontumi was cautioned on three key allegations:
- Engaging in mining operations without a license
- Pollution of water bodies
- Unauthorized entry into a forest reserve
According to the statement, Mr. Antwi-Boasiako cooperated fully with the police during the session, provided his statement, and was subsequently granted bail.
He has been directed to report again to the CID at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.
The police added that further updates on the case will be communicated to the public in due course.
