Dr. Dominic Ayine, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, has announced that Wontumi Farms Limited and its directors will face prosecution for forgery, fraud, and causing financial loss to the state totalling over GH₵24 million.
Speaking during Government Accountability Series on Monday, December 22, Dr. Ayine stated that evidence by the Economic and Organized Crimes Office (EOCO) asserts that Wontumi Farms and its directors caused financial loss to the state through its forged receipts.
He said, “In the circumstances, and in the face of the evidence we have gathered in this investigation thoroughly conducted by the Economic and Organized Crimes Office, we have made the decision to prosecute Wontumi Farms and its directors with defrauding by false pretences, forgery and causing financial loss to the state in sum of Ghs24,255,735.
This figure represents the principal sum plus the interest that has accrued.”
The Attorney General explained that the investigation revealed that the company, led by Bernard Antwi Boasiako, submitted falsified documents to Ghana Exim Bank to obtain a loan under the Mining Alternative Livelihoods Initiative.
Despite receiving funds, the farm enterprise never materialized, and no young persons were employed as intended.
“These are not mere breaches of a loan contract but constitute acts of criminality by no mean a person than the regional chairman of the then ruling Party,” Dr. Ayine emphasized.
The prosecution will include charges related to forgery, fraudulent misrepresentation, and causing financial loss, marking a significant step in holding corporate actors accountable for misuse of public funds.
