Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has officially withdrawn his legal challenge seeking a review of the bail conditions imposed on him by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Wontumi, who was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Tuesday, May 27, and subsequently handed over to EOCO, was granted bail the following day.
However, the bail—pegged at GH₵50 million with two justified sureties—was considered overly stringent by his legal team, who argued that it was designed to obstruct his release.
On May 30, 2025, Wontumi’s lawyers, Marfo & Associates, filed an application at the High Court in Accra seeking a review of the conditions, which they described as excessive and a violation of their client’s right to personal liberty. The case was slated for hearing on Tuesday, June 3.
Despite the initial push for a judicial review, Wontumi’s legal team has since backtracked, issuing a formal notice to both the Attorney General and EOCO confirming the discontinuation of the application.
The withdrawal statement simply read: “Take notice that the applicant herein hereby wholly discontinues the application against the respondents.”
Meanwhile, no official reason has been given for the sudden reversal.
