The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has denied claims that the government plans to sell the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to a private entity.
He made this known when he took his turn during the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
His comments come amid claims that government intends to privatise ECG in efforts to reform the State utility.
However, accounting for the performance of his ministry, Mr. Jinapor indicated that recent cabinet decisions are only intended to allow private sector participation in certain aspects of ECG’s operations.
“Let me put it on record again that we are not selling ECG. What we are seeking to do is involve the private sector, particularly in the billing and collection segment,” he noted.
The sector Minister reassured Ghanaians that ECG will remain publicly owned and that any private engagement is aimed solely at improving service delivery.
Mr. Jinapor also disclosed ongoing efforts to expand rural electrification.
