President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled the refurbished Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) at the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), marking a significant milestone in Ghana’s efforts to revive domestic petroleum refining and strengthen the country’s energy security.
The ceremony also featured the official receipt of Jubilee crude oil for domestic refining, signalling the resumption of refining locally produced crude at the state-owned refinery.
The inauguration of the refurbished CDU is expected to restore a critical component of TOR’s refining operations, enabling the refinery to process crude oil into petroleum products for the local market.
The development forms part of government’s broader strategy to reduce dependence on imported refined petroleum products, enhance value addition within the energy sector, and improve the country’s fuel supply resilience.
Speaking at the event, President Mahama underscored the importance of revitalising the Tema Oil Refinery as a strategic national asset capable of driving industrial growth, creating jobs, and supporting Ghana’s economic transformation.
He noted that refining Jubilee crude locally would help retain greater value within the economy while strengthening the nation’s energy independence.
The President commended the management and staff of TOR, led by Managing Director Edmond Kombat, as well as the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, for their efforts in restoring the refinery’s operations.
He expressed confidence that the renewed refining activities would pave the way for increased efficiency, improved financial performance, and long-term sustainability for the refinery.
