Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has warned illegal land encroachers at the Borteyman Sports Complex to seize development on the land.
The follows growing reports of land encroachment threatening the integrity of the multi-million cedi facility.
The Borteyman Sports Complex served as a centerpiece during the African Games and continues to play a vital role in Ghana’s national sports agenda.
The Minister, during a visit on Monday, July 7, 2025 was visibly disturbed upon discovering unauthorised structures springing up around the undeveloped portions of the site.
The complex occupies a 99-acre stretch of land, but only 43 acres have been developed so far. The remaining 53 acres, earmarked for future sports infrastructure, are now at risk of being lost to private developers.
Addressing the media after the inspection, Mr. Adams condemned the actions of the encroachers and stressed that the land remains a protected national asset.
Mr. Adams warned the developers any project on the disputed land is illegal and would be dismantled at the offender’s cost. He further noted that such investments would not be compensated, no matter the stage of completion.
“This land was secured from the University of Ghana by government as a national sports infrastructure asset, and no private interest will be allowed to compromise its purpose,” he asserted.
“This is public property, funded with taxpayers’ money to advance sports development in this country. We will not allow any unauthorised activity to undermine the purpose for which this complex was built,” he emphasized.
