The Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA) has launched an inquiry into reports circulating online that shipping lines operating in the country are imposing an “Emergency Conflict Surcharge.”
Professor Ransford Gyampo, Chief Executive Officer of the GSA, clarified that while shipping lines may set their own fees, the Authority only regulates local charges and has not authorized or collected any such emergency surcharges.
“I have personally reached out to the complainant and requested all relevant documentary evidence,” Professor Gyampo said. “As of this morning, we have commenced an investigation to verify and address the matter.”
The CEO added that he only became aware of the alleged charges following a social media post, prompting immediate action. “We were not officially informed of any Emergency Conflict Surcharge by any shipping line,” he emphasized, urging the public to refrain from speculation until the investigation concludes.
The GSA stated it is committed to transparency in the shipping sector and to ensuring that any fees imposed by shipping companies comply with regulations and do not disadvantage importers or exporters.
Professor Gyampo assured stakeholders that updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
