Public office not for personal gain, hold leaders accountable — Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has called for a renewed national commitment to accountability, insisting that Ghana’s development hinges on integrity, transparency, and responsible leadership at all levels.

Speaking at the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving held at the Forecourt of the State House on Tuesday, July 1, President Mahama stressed that public office is not a privilege for personal gain but a sacred trust that demands the highest standards of integrity and humility.

According to him, no one including the President, is above the law, adding that leadership must be grounded in honesty, service, and a deep sense of responsibility to the people.

“We must hold those in authority, including myself, accountable to the highest standards of integrity and humility. Public office is not a privilege for personal gain; it is a sacred trust bestowed by the people and a responsibility to serve all, especially the most vulnerable. Even the office of the President, which by the grace of God I now hold, is not above the law.”

President Mahama warned that the absence of accountability fosters corruption, weakens institutions, and erodes public trust, which ultimately threatens national unity and development.

While addressing the gathering, which brought together political leaders, religious groups, civil society organisations, and citizens from all walks of life, the President stressed that building a just and prosperous Ghana requires both leaders and citizens to uphold moral values and demand transparency at all levels of governance.

He also urged Ghanaians to reject divisive tendencies such as tribalism and religious extremism, which can be exploited to mask corruption and poor leadership.

“Let us remain vigilant against the voices of tribalism, against the voices of religious extremism and against the poison of political hostility. These are the seeds of division that we must never let take root in our precious nation, Ghana,” he stated.

The National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving served as a moment of spiritual reflection and a national call for unity, moral leadership, and renewed commitment to accountability as key pillars for Ghana’s progress.
