A suspected armed robber has been shot dead following a gun battle with police on the Donkorkrom–Agordeke highway in Afram Plains North of the Eastern Region.
The incident occurred on Monday, August 25, 2025, after intelligence suggested that a gang of armed robbers was planning to attack travelers on the busy stretch.
Acting swiftly, a joint surveillance team and personnel from the Donkorkrom Divisional Police Command mounted an ambush in anticipation of the attack.
At about 7:30 p.m., the officers spotted two motorbikes suspected to be used by the gang.
When signaled to stop, the riders refused and instead opened fire on the police.
The officers pursued and returned fire, leading to the shooting of one of the suspects, believed to be about 20 years old.
He was rushed to the Presbyterian Hospital in Donkorkrom but was pronounced dead on arrival by medical officers.
His accomplices managed to escape, abandoning two motorbikes — an unregistered Honda and another with registration number M-24-NR 1684.
According to DCOP Isaac Kwadwo Asante, Eastern North Regional Police Commander, police retrieved several items at the scene including: one Sten MK II rifle, 46 rounds of 9mm ammunition (18 loaded in a magazine), 19 live BB cartridges, and four talismans.
Three mobile phones (Infinix, Tecno, and Itel) and a bottle containing a liquid suspected to be honey were also recovered.
The body of the deceased has since been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy, while the exhibits are being held as evidence.
Police say efforts are underway to track down and arrest the escaped suspects.
The armed robbery gang has been terrorizing residents and motorists in the Afram Plains area for nearly two decades.
Various security interventions and special operations over the years have led to the killing and arrest of some suspects; however, the menace still persists.
