The Ghana Police Service has called on the Office of the Attorney-General to provide an update and expedite legal action in the case involving Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who is accused of assaulting a police officer during a May 2025 protest.
According to a docket forwarded to the Attorney-General in June 2025, police investigations concluded that Mr. Afenyo-Markin struck Corporal Forson Abel of the Tesano District Police during the “Save the Judiciary” demonstration in Accra.
The incident, captured in a 1-minute, 13-second video verified by the Cybercrime Unit, led to a full-scale investigation by the Special Investigation Unit (SIU).
Witness statements from senior police officers present confirmed the assault, while Mr. Afenyo-Markin’s counter-claim that he was the one assaulted was found to be unsubstantiated.
Police say despite being issued a medical form to support his claim, the MP failed to return it and ignored several follow-up requests.
With the investigation completed and the docket submitted, the Service is now urging the Attorney-General’s Office to brief the public on progress and take appropriate legal steps to ensure accountability.
