The Ghana Police Service has arrested a suspect in connection with the gruesome murder of Stephen King Amoah, an Immigration Officer who was declared missing on July 4, 2025.
His charred body was discovered five days later in a gutter near the GBC Satellite area, opposite Comet Estate in Accra.
According to police in a statement, Amoah left his residence at Ashongman Estate on the night of July 3 after receiving a WhatsApp message containing images of large sums of cash from a man identified as Bright Aweh.
Aweh had reportedly arranged to meet Amoah at a nearby spot to settle a financial issue but Amoah never returned home and his phone went off shortly after.
On July 9, police found a severely burnt body at Abuom Junction near Kwabenya. Despite the extent of the burns, relatives were able to identify the body as that of the missing officer.
Further examination revealed stab wounds on his chest and neck, suggesting he had been murdered before the attempted burning.
Following a swift investigation, police arrested Bright Aweh. During interrogation, he admitted giving GHS 500,000 to Amoah, claiming part of it was meant to settle debts while the rest was to be kept for later retrieval.
However, Aweh failed to explain the source of the money and gave conflicting accounts during questioning.
“Subsequent Police operations led to the arrest of suspect Bright Aweh, who admitted during interrogation to having given the deceased GHS 500,000.00 in cash. He claimed to have directed the deceased to use part of the money to pay off some debts and hold the remaining amount for later collection. However, the suspect could not clearly explain the source of the funds and gave conflicting statements.”
The Accra Regional Police Command has assured the public that investigations are ongoing to unravel the full details of the crime and bring all those involved to justice.
Meanwhile, the body of Stephen Amoah has been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue.
Amoah, 38, was a well-known figure in the Sports Department of the Ghana Immigration Service. He was married to a police officer and is survived by two young children. His death has shocked many and drawn national attention.
Police are urging anyone with information related to the case to report to the nearest police station.
