The Dansoman Circuit Court has handed a two-year jail term to Yaw Asare, a 48-year-old head porter, after finding him guilty of damaging sections of the newly built Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange in Accra.
Prosecutors told the court that Asare was arrested on June 9, 2025, after deliberately breaking parapet beams and fittings on the flyover.
He was subsequently charged with “causing unlawful damage” under Section 172 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
In a statement confirming the conviction, the Ministry of Roads and Highways described the act as “unacceptable” and expressed growing concern over what it called a surge in the destruction of public road assets, particularly traffic lights and new road installations.
The Ministry cautioned the public that damaging state infrastructure constitutes a criminal offence punishable by law, stressing that millions of cedis are lost each year to repair and replacements.
It further assured that it will intensify collaboration with the Ghana Police Service to crack down on offenders and deter others from similar acts.
Officials say Asare will serve his sentence at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison.
