The National Youth Authority (NYA) has condemned the recent surge in student violence at school sporting events, following serious clashes that left several students injured.
The incidents occurred during zonal athletics competitions involving students from Aggrey Memorial SHS, Adisadel College, Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS), Obrachire SHTS, and Kwanyako SHTS.
Authorities reported that the violence included a near-fatal attack on a 17-year-old student, sparking nationwide concern over rising indiscipline in second-cycle institutions.
In response, six students from Aggrey Memorial SHS and three from SWESBUS were arrested within 24 hours. The NYA commended the Ghana Police Service and Ghana Education Service for their swift and decisive intervention.
Acting NYA CEO Osman A. Ayariga stressed that such behavior erodes the values of fair play, respect, and civic responsibility that schools are meant to instill.
“Violence has no place in our schools,” he said, urging students to exercise self-control and uphold positive values.
To curb further incidents, the NYA is partnering with the National Peace Council to implement programs promoting conflict resolution, peaceful competition, and youth leadership.
The Authority reiterated its commitment to fostering disciplined, responsible, and law-abiding students nationwide.
