The Ghana Education Service (GES) has clarified that reports circulating about the death of a student at Ghana National College in Cape Coast relate to an incident that occurred eight years ago, not a recent tragedy.
In a Facebook post on Friday, November 6, the Service dismissed suggestions of a fresh student death at the institution, urging the public to disregard the reports.
“No student has passed away at Ghana National College. This particular reported demise occurred in 2018,” GES stated.
The clarification follows the circulation of reports concerning the death of a first-year student, Ruby Teiko, who reportedly died after experiencing breathing difficulties during a dormitory inspection at the school’s Elsie Dadzie Hall.
The incident, which occurred in May 2018, involved allegations that the asthmatic student had complained of difficulty breathing twice but was allegedly asked by the housemistress on duty and another staff member to wait until the inspection was over.
She reportedly collapsed and was subsequently taken to the Cape Coast Government Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
GES expressed concern about the renewed circulation of the incident, accusing unidentified individuals of reopening the painful memories of the bereaved family and damaging the reputation of school staff.
“The general public is therefore urged to disregard the disingenuous attempts by some faceless individuals to reopen the painful wounds of the bereaved family and unjustly besmirch the reputation of the teachers/house mistresses and the school,” the Service said.
The clarification is aimed at correcting the impression that the reported death is a recent occurrence at the school, while urging the public to exercise caution over information circulating on social media.
