The Minority Caucus in Parliament is demanding swift government intervention to address recurring tragedies on the Volta Lake following the recent boat disaster near Kete Krachi that claimed 15 lives on October 11, 2025.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 20, the Caucus extended condolences to the bereaved families and criticized the government for its inaction on improving inland water transport safety.
The Minority recalled that in 2020, the then NPP administration secured a $150 million facility from the Korean Exim Bank to modernize inland water transport, including the installation of floating pontoons and safety systems on the Volta Lake.
According to the group, feasibility studies conducted by Ghanaian firm Vision Consult have already outlined the infrastructure needed to make the Volta Lake a safe and efficient transport corridor, but progress has since stalled.
“The current government treats this as a matter of national priority,” the statement urged, emphasizing that over two million Ghanaians rely on the lake for transport and trade.
The Minority further called on the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) to intensify its oversight by enforcing strict registration of boats and regulating loading capacities to prevent overloading — a major cause of fatal accidents on the lake.
They warned that continued neglect of inland water safety would represent a “serious dereliction of duty” to the citizens who depend on the Volta Lake daily.
