The Managing Director of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Makhtar Diop, has commended Ghana for its recent economic progress following a meeting with Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson.
The meeting, held at the Ministry of Finance on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, focused on Ghana’s next phase of economic transformation and ways to mobilise private-sector investment to support growth.
Key areas of discussion included commercial agriculture, value addition and job creation, with particular attention to sugar, cocoa processing, palm oil and poultry.
Dr Ato Forson also highlighted Ghana’s ambition to develop into a pharmaceutical hub for West Africa and called for increased private-sector participation in priority sectors.
Mr Diop praised the progress made in addressing Ghana’s inflation and debt challenges and assured the Finance Minister of the IFC’s continued support for the country’s development agenda.
The IFC chief said the improved economic conditions provided an opportunity to attract more domestic and international private capital into Ghana.
The IFC currently has a portfolio of about US$500 million in Ghana, with a potential investment pipeline of approximately US$1.2 billion, according to Mr Diop.
The pipeline covers sectors including agriculture, energy and infrastructure, with job creation also identified as a key priority.
Mr Diop also stressed the importance of increasing local production of goods that Ghana currently imports, citing poultry as one area where domestic production could be expanded.
He said strengthening local production could help create jobs, reduce vulnerability to external shocks and build a more resilient economy.
