President John Dramani Mahama has sworn in Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Ghana’s 16th Chief Justice, following Parliament’s approval of his nomination on November 13, 2025. Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who served as Acting Chief Justice since April 22, 2025, steps into the role after the suspension and dismissal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
His confirmation was met with overwhelming support in Parliament, with 163 votes in favor and 69 against, despite last-minute objections from some minority MPs questioning aspects of his record and judicial approach.
At the swearing-in ceremony on November 17 at Jubilee House, President Mahama described the event as “a solemn and historic one,” and reaffirmed his commitment to an independent judiciary.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in him and pledged to uphold the Constitution, strengthen judicial independence, and ensure accessible, timely justice for all Ghanaians.
He emphasized the need for fairness, transparency, and accountability within the judiciary, promising to work with the Judicial Council, the Bar, and other stakeholders to implement reforms and improve legal processes.
He now assumes full responsibility as Chief Justice, presiding over the Supreme Court and steering reforms aimed at rebuilding public trust in Ghana’s justice system.
