President John Dramani Mahama has touched down in Cairo ahead of the grand opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) on Saturday, November 1, 2025.
The museum, overlooking the Giza Pyramids, is the world’s largest archaeological institution, housing over 4,500 treasures from King Tutankhamun’s tomb and celebrating more than 5,000 years of Egyptian civilization.
The opening ceremony, under the patronage of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, will host kings, world leaders, and dignitaries from around the globe. President al-Sisi has described the GEM as a “symbol of Egypt’s leadership in global culture.”
The $1 billion project, delayed from its initial July opening due to regional tensions, was realized through a collaboration between Egypt and Japan, with Japan contributing ¥84.2 billion ($800 million) in soft loans and technical expertise in conservation and museum management.
The GEM’s inauguration coincides with Egypt’s tourism revival, with $14.4 billion in revenue in 2023–2024 and 15 million visitors in the first nine months of 2025.
President Mahama is accompanied by his official entourage, including Dr. Callistus Mahama, Lt. Col. Abdul-Wahab Issah, Stanislav Dogbe, and Ambassador Aikins Abrokwa, underscoring Ghana’s engagement in global cultural diplomacy.
The museum stands as a blend of ancient heritage, modern innovation, and international cooperation, marking a significant milestone in global archaeology and culture.
