President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghana’s newly commissioned High Commissioners and Ambassadors Designates to make their diplomatic assignments directly benefit the nation’s development agenda.
At a commissioning ceremony at Flagstaff House, President Mahama emphasized that the role of Ghanaian envoys extends far beyond ceremonial duties.
“Your work must translate into jobs, growth, opportunities, security and measurable benefits for our people,” he said. He stressed that each initiative—whether attracting investors, opening new markets, or fostering strategic partnerships—should serve a “broader national purpose.”
Highlighting the strategic role of Ghana’s foreign missions, the President said envoys are central to building the country’s global reputation.
Missions abroad, he noted, must project Ghana as a “dependable partner, a predictable destination for business and tourism, and a principled yet pragmatic voice in regional and global affairs.”
“As heads of mission, you are expected to move from passive representation to purposeful engagement, from routine reporting to proactive problem-solving, and from mere presence to real impact,” President Mahama added, urging the envoys to align all mission plans with national development priorities.
The five diplomats officially commissioned are:
- Alhaji Said Saleh Sinare, Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
- Lt. Col. Al Hajj Umar Sanda Ahmed, Ambassador to the Republic of Mali
- Kofi Attor, Ambassador to the Republic of Cuba
- Emmanuel Opeku, Ambassador-in-Situ
- Regina Appiah-Sam, High Commissioner to the Republic of Malta
President Mahama said today’s diplomacy requires proactive engagement, emphasizing that envoys must identify opportunities for Ghanaian businesses, strengthen bilateral trade ties, and anticipate challenges affecting national interests. He urged the new ambassadors to ensure that every diplomatic effort is purpose-driven and tied to tangible results for citizens.
The commissioning underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging Ghana’s diplomatic network to advance economic growth, investment, and national development.
