Downsizing the structure of government has eased pressure on public finances, resulting in substantial savings for the state.
This was announced by the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, during the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.
According to him, the reduction in the number of ministers under the John Dramani Mahama administration has significantly cut costs associated with official vehicles, accommodation, and other entitlements.
“So every minister of state… you are entitled to a four-wheel drive, a land cruiser… a saloon car… accommodation… fuel… and salary… Now, if at a point there were 125 ministers and now there are 60, it means that you are avoiding purchasing 65 Landcruiser… You are not going to have to spend money refurbishing 65 bungalows… That is just for ministers alone,” he explained.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu added that cuts to presidential staff numbers have further contributed to the savings made by the government.
“The fact and reality now is that we have fewer people in government now than we did under the previous administration. Significant savings have been made. That cannot be disputed,” he stated.
His comment comes after, President Mahama during the 2024 election campaign, promised to run a lean government capped at 60 ministers to ensure efficiency and reduce unnecessary expenditure.
According to Kwakye Ofosu, the administration has delivered on that promise while maintaining effective governance.
