Police in Accra have uncovered a shocking case of drug trafficking after intercepting a private ambulance allegedly being used as cover to transport large quantities of cannabis.

According to the Accra Regional Police Command, the vehicle, a Hyundai Hiace with registration number GX 277-20, was intercepted on September 10, 2025, near Jamboree Drinking Spot at Labadi Maami following weeks of surveillance.

The driver and owner of the vehicle, 39-year-old Kwame Mananyi Tuanda, was arrested on the spot. Police say a search of the ambulance revealed sacks containing hundreds of compressed parcels of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis. In total, 700 parcels and 473 wraps were seized.

Preliminary investigations indicate the consignment had been transported from Kpando in the Volta North Region to Accra for onward distribution. Tuanda reportedly admitted to police that he had been in the trade since last year.

Investigators further revealed that the suspect bought the Hyundai Hiace as a regular car before branding it as an ambulance and fitting it with a siren. Aside from drug trafficking, the vehicle was also being used to transport dead bodies.

The police have since impounded the vehicle, with the exhibits retained as evidence.

The seized substances will be forwarded to the Forensic Science Laboratory for testing. Tuanda is expected to be arraigned soon while investigations continue.

The Accra Regional Police Command has warned against the abuse of vehicles designated for essential services, stressing its determination to clamp down on drug trafficking networks.
