Plans are underway for Ghana’s main international airport to drop the Kotoka name, with government preparing to officially rename the facility Accra International Airport through Parliament.
The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, revealed the move at a leadership media briefing ahead of the resumption of the Ninth Parliament on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.
According to him, the renaming will be carried out through legislation to be introduced by the Minister for Transport.
“We are changing the name of our airport from Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport. A bill will be brought by the Minister for Transport for the name to be changed,” Mr. Ayariga stated.
The decision follows sustained public debate and advocacy by civil society groups who contend that the current name contradicts Ghana’s democratic ideals due to his role in the 1966 coup.
Mr. Ayariga explained that the airport renaming forms part of a wider transport and infrastructure legislative agenda to be considered by Parliament in the new session.
