Kofi Akpaloo, leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), has been released from EOCO custody after spending eight days in detention.

Akpaloo was initially arrested on September 3, 2025, in a dawn operation at his Kumasi residence by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), following allegations of financial misconduct including fraud, money laundering, dissipation of public funds, and causing financial loss to the state.

His release on Thursday, September 11, came after he met the conditions of a GH¢10 million bail, which required two sureties.

During his first public comments after being freed, Akpaloo described his detention as politically motivated, linking it to his recent criticism of the government.

“They say they are conducting investigations. But it is politics as usual. My arrest and detention were due to my recent utterances about the government,” he told journalists.

Despite being granted bail, Akpaloo remained in custody for several days as he worked to satisfy the stringent requirements. Authorities confirmed that investigations into the allegations are ongoing.

The release marks a temporary reprieve for the opposition leader, who was greeted by supporters and well-wishers upon leaving EOCO’s premises.

This development underscores the high-profile nature of the case, drawing public attention not only to alleged financial irregularities but also to broader discussions on political accountability and the treatment of opposition figures in Ghana.
