The husband of Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, has died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Zanzibar.
Tanzania’s Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi announced his death on Monday and expressed condolences to the bereaved family.
Hafidh Hassan, who had been receiving treatment for a heart condition, became Tanzania’s first gentleman in 2021 after his wife assumed the presidency following the death of President John Magufuli.
The Vice President said arrangements were underway for his burial in Zanzibar, the family’s native home.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan is currently serving her second term after winning the 2025 presidential election with more than 97% of the vote. The election was disputed, with candidates from Tanzania’s two main opposition parties barred from contesting.
The couple had four children – three sons and a daughter, who is a lawmaker.
Kenyan President William Ruto expressed condolences to President Hassan and her family.
“President Samia has lost a lifelong companion, her children a beloved father, and Tanzania a distinguished son,” he said.
Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimiye also extended his condolences to President Hassan and the people of Tanzania.
