A 24-year-old Ghanaian, Joseph Owusu, has died in New York under unexplained circumstances, days after the reported killing of 15-year-old Javits in the Bronx.
Following the latest death, Ghana’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations has visited Owusu’s family to offer condolences and assure them of the government’s support.
In a statement dated Wednesday, November 4, 2026, the Mission said the delegation, led by Deputy Permanent Representative Ben Dotsei Malor and Consul-General Anthony El-Ada, visited the family on the directive of Ghana’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, Samuel Yao Kumah.
It said the team “conveyed the condolences of the Government of Ghana to the bereaved family.”
The visit was also undertaken on behalf of Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who had contacted Owusu’s mother, Mavis, to express his sympathy and solidarity.
“I have been shocked and saddened by this tragic news, especially coming on the heels of the horrible news of the killing of 15-year-old Javits, also in the Bronx, New York,” Ablakwa said.
The minister assured the family that “the Government of Ghana stands firmly with them and will work with the relevant authorities and agencies of the United States Government to ensure that justice is served.”
Owusu worked as a caregiver, supporting persons with disabilities, and also served as a chorister at his local Methodist church.
The Mission said he was remembered by his family as “a beloved son and brother,” adding that his death had left his family and community devastated.
His brother, Kwadwo, has called for justice through a thorough and transparent police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death and for those responsible to be brought to justice.
Police have informed the family that an autopsy is being conducted on Owusu’s body as investigations continue.
The circumstances surrounding his death have not yet been established.
