Government has unveiled a major push to transform national road infrastructure with the rollout of a new **198.7km Accra–Kumasi Expressway**, designed to drastically cut travel time and transport costs between the two cities.
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced the project during the 2026 Budget presentation on Thursday, highlighting its scale and long-term economic impact.
“Mr. Speaker, a flagship of the Big Push Infrastructure Programme is the Accra-Kumasi Expressway Project, Ghana’s first modern six-lane bi-directional Class A Expressway,” he said.
The new alignment, he explained, will significantly shorten the journey.
“The Accra-Kumasi Expressway… will reduce current travel distance by over 50 kilometres, from 250 kilometres to 198.7 kilometres,” he noted, adding that it is also “expected to halve travel time between Accra and Kumasi, reduce transport costs by nearly 40 percent.”
Dr. Forson said the project will generate thousands of jobs and open new economic corridors.
“The Accra-Kumasi Expressway project alone is expected to create over 30,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction.”
The expressway will come with eight major interchanges, three large river bridges, and full-service areas including emergency medical centres, fire stations, rest stops, EV charging points, and fuel stations—operating around the clock.
“All these facilities will operate 24 hours in line with our 24-Hour Economy programme,” he added.
The project also includes automated 20-lane toll plazas in Accra and Kumasi to improve revenue collection and traffic flow.
