The Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources says it is preparing to scale up the National Rental Assistance Scheme (NRAS) nationwide, following the successful pilot of the programme in six regions.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Sector Minister Kenneth Gilbert Adjei said the ministry is poised to establish the scheme in all 16 regions as part of efforts to improve access to affordable rental housing.
“The National Rental Assistance Scheme, established by the Government in 2023 as a social housing programme, aims to facilitate access to rental properties for qualifying beneficiaries by providing rent advance,” the Minister stated.
According to him, the scheme supported 2,031 Ghanaians in 2025 alone, bringing the total number of beneficiaries since inception to 4,732. The NRAS is currently being piloted in Greater Accra, Bono East, Northern, Eastern, Western and Ashanti regions, with a focus on low- and middle-income earners.
Mr. Adjei noted that the programme has demonstrated strong financial sustainability, adding that “the disbursement recovery rate is about 99%, indicating that the government’s seed money is fully recoverable and in circulation.”
He said the positive outcomes recorded so far have informed government’s decision to expand the scheme nationwide in the short to medium term.
“The programme’s eligibility criteria, application process and beneficiaries’ success stories highlight its effectiveness in addressing housing needs and enhancing community well-being,” he added.
The planned nationwide rollout forms part of broader housing sector reforms aimed at reducing rent-related hardships and strengthening social housing support across the country.
