Government has reduced the price of a 64-kilogram bag of cocoa from GHC 3,600 to GHC 2,587 as part of measures to address the ongoing crisis in the cocoa sector.
The announcement was made by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson following an emergency Cabinet meeting chaired by President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday, February 11, 2026.
The meeting was convened to tackle delays in payments to Licensed Cocoa Buyers (LCBs), which have negatively affected farmers across the country.
Speaking to the media, Dr. Forson said Cabinet has directed COCOBOD to immediately settle all outstanding debts owed to cocoa farmers. He also cited a sharp decline in international cocoa prices as a key reason for the new producer price.
“In order to cushion the farmer, the PPLC has recommended that the farmer be paid 90% of the achieved gross FOB of 4,200 US dollars per ton to mitigate the adverse impact on the farmer as a result of the fall in the world market price,” he explained.
He added, “Effective today, Thursday, 12 February 2026, the new producer price for the remainder of the 2025-2026 crop season will now be 41,392 Ghana cedis per ton and 2,587 Ghana cedis per bag. This measure has become necessary to reflect the reality of the world market price of cocoa, ensure the injection of immediate liquidity for expedited payment of farmers and guarantee the sustainability of our cocoa sector.”
Dr. Forson concluded by expressing government’s appreciation to cocoa farmers for their patience and sacrifices over the years, emphasizing that the reforms aim to safeguard the interests of both farmers and the sector.
