The Government of Ghana has launched a major expansion of Terminal 2 at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) as part of plans to reduce overcrowding at the increasingly busy Terminal 3.
The move, spearheaded by the Ministry of Transport, will see Terminal 2 revived and restructured to accommodate both domestic and international flights.
The project will be executed in two distinct phases, targeting improved efficiency and smoother passenger flow across the airport.
Speaking during a working visit to the airport, Transport Minister Joseph Nikpe Bukari said the expansion forms part of a broader agenda to modernize aviation infrastructure and respond to growing passenger numbers at KIA.
He explained that redistributing flights between the terminals will ease the pressure on Terminal 3, enhancing the comfort and experience for travelers while maintaining high service standards.
Over the years, Terminal 3 has become Ghana’s primary gateway for international air traffic, but the sharp rise in passenger volume has led to periodic bottlenecks and long queues, particularly during peak travel seasons.
The Ministry of Transport, in collaboration with the Ghana Airports Company Limited, says the new arrangement will be operational soon, once the necessary adjustments and upgrades are completed.
“If you visit Terminal 3 at rush hour time, you will realise that we have congestion there. So, we have partitioned Terminal 2 into two phases; one for domestic, and where we are currently standing, for international flights.
“So, that we can be able to bring some loads from terminal 3 here, thereby decongesting terminal 3 to have that kind of comfort and space for our travelers,” he explained.
