The Government of Ghana has unveiled a GHS 1 billion Bawku Revitalisation Fund as part of efforts to rebuild and economically transform the conflict-hit municipality following years of instability.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, after Cabinet formally endorsed the Bawku Conflict Mediation Report presented by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
Government acknowledged that prolonged violence in the area had resulted in “grave human, social, and economic losses,” undermining livelihoods, discouraging investment and stalling development.
According to the statement, President John Dramani Mahama has instructed the Minister for Finance to establish the fund, which will be implemented over a three-year period from 2026 to 2028.
“Insecurity over the years has severely constrained public and private investment and stalled critical infrastructure development. In response, His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister for Finance to establish a One Billion Ghana Cedi (GHS 1,000,000,000) Bawku Revitalisation Fund,” the statement said.
It further explained that, “The Fund which shall be disbursed over a three-year period between 2026 and 2028, will be dedicated to the reconstruction and development of priority infrastructure, including roads, healthcare, education, dam and irrigation facilities for all-year-round agriculture, security installations, and economic and commercial facilities, to restore Bawku to its historic position as a significant economic and trading hub in Northern Ghana.”
Government said the initiative is designed not only to address the physical damage caused by the conflict, but also to consolidate peace through inclusive development, job creation and the restoration of economic confidence in the area.
