A Ghanaian boxer, Ernest Akushey, popularly known as “Bahubali” has passed days after a heavy defeat in a boxing bout.
According to reports, the 27-year-old boxer died in the early hours of Tuesday, September 23, 2025, barely a week after his last boxing event at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
Akushey, who rose through the ranks at the Wadada Gym in James Town, was once an undefeated prospect with a 6-0-0 record.
He earned his “Bahubali” moniker from his ferocious, crowd-pleasing style, likened to the warrior hero in the Indian blockbuster film.
His final fight took place on Saturday, September 13, when he faced rising contender Jacob Dickson in a highly anticipated super middleweight showdown.
The bout, however, turned into a one-sided contest as Dickson dominated from the early rounds before sealing victory with an eighth-round technical knockout (TKO).
Widely circulated videos of the fight showed Akushey struggling under relentless pressure, sparking sympathy among fans even before the tragic news of his death.
According to reports from James Town TV and Africabox Showup, Akushey fell ill on Monday, September 22, complaining of undisclosed symptoms that worsened overnight.
He was pronounced dead around 2 a.m. the following morning. Sources close to the family suspect the cause may be linked to internal injuries sustained during the Dickson fight, though no official autopsy has yet been released.
