Residents of Twifo Bukuruso in the Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira District of the Central Region have appealed to the government and relevant authorities to intervene over the alleged filling of a natural drainage channel with gravel and other materials for a private construction project.
The residents claim that a former Assembly Member for the area, Mr. Michael Asare, has deposited gravel and other materials into a stream channel that runs through the community to facilitate a building project.
According to them, the drainage channel serves as a natural pathway for rainwater, and any obstruction could worsen the flooding challenges the community has experienced over the years.
The residents said they had been engaging stakeholders to find a lasting solution to recurring flooding whenever there is heavy rainfall. However, they expressed concern after observing tipper trucks transporting and dumping gravel and sand into the waterway.
They alleged that the activity was linked to the construction project of the former Assembly Member and warned that continued blockage of the drainage channel could result in serious consequences, including damage to lives and property during periods of heavy rain.
The residents are therefore calling on the government, the Member of Parliament, the District Chief Executive, and other responsible agencies to urgently investigate the situation and take appropriate action.
Meanwhile, the Assembly Member for the area, Hon. Daniel Fosu, said he had reported the matter to the relevant authorities and traditional leaders for attention.
However, he expressed concern that no significant action had been taken so far and appealed for immediate intervention to address the concerns of the community and prevent a possible disaster.
