The Editor-in-Chief of Whatsup News and President of the Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), Mr David Sitsope Tamekloe, has donated relief items to residents affected by recent flooding at Agbozume-Ahorkpoe in the Ketu South municipality of the Volta Region.
The donation, made through the Ketu South Municipal Office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), was aimed at easing the hardship faced by families whose homes and livelihoods were impacted by the floods.
Mr Tamekloe said the support was made possible through contributions from individuals and partners, including Mrs Veronica Debrah, wife of the Chief of Staff, Mr Julius Debrah, and other well-wishers.
He explained that the intervention was intended to provide immediate relief to affected households while assuring victims in other communities that similar support would be extended where possible.
Mr Tamekloe also urged residents to adopt environmentally responsible practices to reduce the risk of future flooding.
He cautioned against building on waterways and indiscriminate dumping of waste, which he noted often blocks drainage systems and worsens flooding situations.
He further encouraged communities to engage in regular communal clean-up exercises, stressing that floods do not only cause displacement but can also increase the risk of disease outbreaks when sanitation conditions deteriorate.
The Ketu South Municipal Director of NADMO, Mr Ferguson Ahorlu, commended Mr Tamekloe and his partners for the timely intervention, describing Agbozume-Ahorkpoe as one of the worst-affected communities in the municipality.
He appealed to residents living in flood-prone areas to consider relocating to safer locations during the rainy season to protect lives and property.
Mr Ahorlu disclosed that NADMO had commenced the distribution of relief items received for flood victims across the municipality and assured that efforts were ongoing to reach all affected households.
“Though the items may not fully replace what has been lost, they will help ease the burden on victims,” he said.
Receiving the items on behalf of residents, the Assembly Member for the Ahorkpoe Electoral Area, Mr Saviour Agbeko Awoye, expressed appreciation to the donors and assured that the items would be distributed fairly among beneficiaries.
Some beneficiaries also expressed gratitude, describing the support as timely and helpful during a difficult period.
The relief package included soap products, sanitary items, tissue products, rice, cooking oil, noodles, sachet water and soft drinks, among other essential supplies.
