Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has shut down the production of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix following the discovery of severe safety and hygiene lapses at the Nutrifoods Ghana Limited factory.
The decision comes in the wake of multiple consumer reports about bloated pouches and cans, some of which were found to contain mold.
A subsequent investigation by the FDA uncovered faulty sealing on canned products, poor maintenance of production equipment, and weak quality control systems — all of which compromised product safety.
In a public statement dated Sunday, August 3, the FDA confirmed the suspension and cited “unacceptable threats to public health.”
The regulator has also enforced a full market recall covering all canned Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix and selected batches of the 380g and 1.05kg pouches.
According to FDA, this is not the first regulatory red flag for Nutrifoods. Earlier in January 2025, the company’s canning lines had already been barred from producing the tomato mix, raising concerns over compliance with safety protocols.
Nutrifoods Ghana, in its own statement dated August 1, acknowledged the ongoing recall and outlined steps it is taking to cooperate with authorities. The company also urged consumers in possession of the affected products to return them to its Tema office or any authorized distributor nationwide.
In a move to restore public trust, the FDA has launched an internal audit to determine whether any regulatory lapses allowed production to resume after the earlier suspension.
Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the affected products and follow recall instructions. Nutrifoods has provided contact details to assist with inquiries and product returns.
