The Central East Regional Police Command has taken custody of a 45-year-old man for allegedly murdering a woman in her 50s at the onion market at Dominase in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region.
According to eyewitness accounts, the suspect is believed to have strangled the deceased after she reportedly refused his request for intimacy.
The victim, identified as 50-year-old Habiba, was said to be on her way to purchase fresh cow milk from a nearby ranch when the incident occurred.
Her son, who was on the phone with her at the time, reportedly alerted relatives after his mother indicated that she was in danger. He is said to have heard a scream before the call abruptly ended.
Residents who were informed traced her location and later found her unconscious in a nearby bush.
Community members mounted surveillance in the area, leading to the arrest of the suspect, who was initially handed over to the Potsin Police.
Speaking to Citi News, Yusif Abdallah, an eyewitness, said, “At around 9 am, Adams informed me that he was speaking with his mom on the phone, but she went silent suddenly after screaming. So we moved our motorbikes to the Canadian block factory area and found her unconscious.
“We saw the suspect with blood stains on his hands and had him arrested after we found the woman’s slippers in his possession.”
A reinforcement team from the Central East Regional Command was later dispatched to take custody of the suspect after some residents reportedly gathered at the Potsin Police Station demanding that he be handed over to them.
Police investigations are ongoing.
