All social gatherings on the University of Ghana campus have been suspended following a recent spike in COVID-19 cases.
This was confirmed by the the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Rosina I. Kyerematen in a statement on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.
This directive comes after the University’s Health Services Directorate on June 23 confirmed a resurgence of COVID-19 cases within and around the university community.
Both suspected and confirmed cases have been reported, prompting the reactivation of the university’s COVID-19 response protocols.
In its notice, the university advised all students, staff, and visitors to remain vigilant and adhere to preventive measures, including wearing face masks in enclosed or crowded spaces, frequent handwashing or use of alcohol-based sanitizers, and maintaining at least one metre of physical distancing.
Individuals exhibiting flu-like symptoms have been advised to stay home and seek immediate medical attention.
The Health Directorate has also reinstated screening and triage protocols at all campus health facilities to help identify and manage potential cases early.
According to the directive, all events organised by student groups, associations, and halls of residence be put on hold until further notice.
The suspension affects all week celebrations, parties, and other social activities organised by groups such as the Student Representative Council (SRC), Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), Junior Common Rooms (JCRs), and various departmental and school associations.
According to university authorities, the temporary ban is a proactive measure aimed at containing the spread of the virus and protecting the health of students, staff, and members of the wider university community.
The Office of Student Affairs has urged strict compliance with the directive and assured that the situation will be reviewed based on developments. Key university offices, including the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs), the Director of Public Affairs, the Director of Safety and Security Services, and heads of departments and halls, have been tasked with enforcing the new measures.
University management says it will continue to monitor the situation and provide regular updates, urging the campus community to cooperate fully in protecting lives and ensuring minimal disruption to academic activities.
