The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, has been granted bail by an Accra Circuit Court in the sum of GH¢50,000 with one surety, without justification.
The decision comes days after the same court initially refused him bail, leaving him in police custody following his arrest on September 8, 2025.
Abronye was charged with offensive conduct and publication of false news after making allegations against the Inspector General of Police and the ruling party, which authorities described as potentially inflammatory. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
His lawyers, led by Daniel Martey Addo, welcomed the ruling, stressing that Abronye’s health had worsened during detention.
They described the court’s latest decision as a relief for both his family and legal team, with steps underway to meet the bail conditions for his release.
The outspoken NPP regional chairman had earlier applied for political asylum in eight countries, citing political persecution and threats to his life.
His case has since fueled debates about free speech, opposition rights, and the use of state security powers in Ghana as the NPP has announced plans to protest on September 23 against alleged State-sponsored intimidation of party members.
