Calls to remove the leadership of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) have intensified as the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) adds its voice to an earlier demand by the University of Ghana (UG) branch.
This follows an emergency executive meeting on Monday, January 26, 2026, UTAG-KNUST said its position reinforces the call already made by UTAG-UG for the removal of GTEC’s Director-General, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, and his deputy, Prof. Augustine Ocloo.
In a statement dated Tuesday, January 27, the association criticised the current GTEC leadership for failing to fulfil its mandate, accusing the Commission of adopting approaches that have done little to strengthen Ghana’s public universities.
UTAG-KNUST pointed to worsening student-lecturer ratios, unresolved policies on post-retirement contracts and office-holding extensions, and the lack of clear guidance on the payroll status of retired lecturers.
The group also raised concerns about deteriorating lecture halls and laboratories in need of renovation and expansion, asserting that these shortcomings have left university management constrained and are affecting the quality of teaching and learning nationwide.
UTAG-KNUST has therefore the resignation or removal of Prof. Abdulai and Prof. Ocloo by January 31, warning that failure to act could result in further industrial action.
