A tricycle rider has allegedly burned his wife and five children to death at Breman-Dunkwa in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality of the Central Region.
The horrific incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, November 1, 2025. According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), officers from the Dunkwa-On-Offin Fire Station received a distress call around 1:04 a.m. and rushed to the scene.
Upon arrival, firefighters found one of the bedrooms in a four-bedroom house completely engulfed in flames and locked from the outside.
The crew managed to contain the fire within minutes, but tragically, seven people — a woman and her five children aged between one and 15 years — were found burnt to death.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was deliberately set by the woman’s husband, identified as Yaw Afriyie, popularly known as Batman, a tricycle rider.
He allegedly poured petrol on his wife and children, locked them inside the room, and set the house ablaze after a misunderstanding with his wife.
After committing the act, Afriyie reportedly fled into a nearby bush, where he was later found hanging from a tree, believed to have taken his own life.
The charred bodies of the victims have been handed over to the Ghana Police Service and transported to the Dunkwa-On-Offin Government Hospital for preservation and autopsy.
The community of Breman-Dunkwa has been left in shock and mourning following the devastating incident.
