The Ghana Education Service (GES) has ordered the immediate suspension of all inter-school sporting activities in the Central Region after reports of violent clashes among students during recent zonal athletics competitions.
In a directive dated February 22, 2026, Juliette Dufie Otami, Central Regional Director of Education, described the incidents as “grave” and a serious threat to the safety of students, staff, and spectators.
She emphasized that the suspension applies to all Senior High Schools (SHSs) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTSs) in the region and will remain in effect until further notice.
“This temporary measure is intended to enable management to undertake a thorough review of the prevailing situation… and develop appropriate strategies and preventive mechanisms to forestall any recurrence of such violent incidents,” the directive stated.
School heads have been instructed to immediately halt all scheduled competitions, communicate the suspension to staff and students, and ensure strict compliance. GES stressed that the directive is effective immediately and must be followed without exception.
The Regional Director noted that school sports are meant to promote discipline, teamwork, mutual respect, and healthy competition, but recent events have undermined these objectives.
She assured that sporting activities will resume only under conditions that guarantee safety and maintain the spirit of competition.
