The Chief of Bomfa in the Afigya Kwabre South District of the Ashanti Region, Nana Kwaku Twumasi, has publicly declared his long-standing affiliation with the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), revealing that he defected from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the administration of former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
Speaking at a public engagement organised by the District Chief Executive for Afigya Kwabre South at Bomfa, the traditional ruler said his political journey began as a committed supporter of the NPP before switching allegiance to the NDC several years ago.
Nana Twumasi recounted his involvement in NPP political activities during the administration of former President Jerry John Rawlings, describing how he actively participated in campaigns against the then NDC government.
He also recalled an incident during an NPP campaign rally addressed by former President Kufuor in Asawase, where, according to him, three of his colleagues lost their lives while he survived the tragic incident.
Despite his commitment to the NPP, the chief said he decided to leave the party after former President Kufuor publicly acknowledged the challenges of governing and appealed to Ghanaians for patience.
According to Nana Twumasi, that admission marked a turning point for him, as he became disillusioned after the promises made during the campaign period.
He said his decision to join the NDC attracted strong opposition from some residents of Bomfa, with protests reportedly staged against his enstoolment because of his political affiliation.
The traditional ruler further alleged that Bomfa has over the years been denied critical infrastructure and socio-economic development due to partisan politics.
He called for an end to political discrimination in the allocation of development projects, stressing that communities should benefit from national development regardless of their perceived political leanings.
