The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has elected Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, as its parliamentary candidate for the Ayawaso East by-election scheduled for March 3, 2026.
Baba Jamal won the party’s primaries held in the constituency on Saturday, beating four other contenders, including Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the late Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure.
Results showed Baba Jamal secured 431 votes, while Hajia Amina Adam polled 399. Mohammed Ramne obtained 88 votes, Dr Yakubu Azimdow had 45 votes, and Najib Sani received 1 vote.
The primaries were, however, marked by allegations that Baba Jamal distributed television sets and other items during the process, an issue that drew attention among some party supporters.
The contest was organised to select a replacement for the late MP, Mahama Naser Toure, whose death created a vacancy in the seat.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission (EC) has set March 3 for the by-election, and Baba Jamal will now lead the NDC’s campaign in a bid to retain the constituency.
